Robert Suttles, MAI
Mr. Suttles has more than 20 years real property appraisal experience. Beginning his career working as a staff appraiser for a local bank, Robert enhanced his credentials by completing the rigorous education, experience review, and testing required by the Appraisal Institute to be awarded the MAI designation, earned by commercial property appraisers.
In 2005, Robert embarked on the new path of self-employment and opened Northwest Real Estate Valuation, LLC. Having worked in a home office environment for the first few years, the desire to expand the business lead to acquiring an office located at 2105 Continental Place in Mount Vernon. NWREV employs five full time appraisers and one appraisal support person.
Although the focus of Robert’s practice is conservation and natural resource property appraising, he routinely completes commercial property assignments for financial institutions, government agencies, and private parties for mortgages, potential sale, estate, and tax planning. In addition to being listed as an approved appraiser for several banks, other clients include local county government, dike districts, and conservation organizations whose focus is protecting environmentally sensitive real estate for habitat and natural characteristics. Robert is an approved appraiser for the United States Department of the Interior and Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
Robert completes appraisal assignments for the Skagit County Farmland Legacy Program and the Whatcom County Purchase of Development Rights Program; programs that acquires agriculture conservation easements on farmland. When working for land trusts and other conservation oriented clients the completion of complex appraisal assignments involving easement and partial acquisitions are common.
Robert has a working knowledge of the Uniform Standards for Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), the Uniform Appraisal Standards for Federal Land Acquisitions (UASFLA), and the Recreation Conservation Office Manual 3 appraisal standards as a lead appraiser and as a review appraiser.
Mark Salzer, MAI
Mark Salzer grew up south of Seattle and graduated from Western Washington University in 2001 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. After graduating, he had jobs in retail banking before working in an attorney’s office. In his work with the attorney, Mark decided to begin to pursue a career in Real Estate Appraisal. In 2006, he and his fiancé made the decision to move to Spokane, where he began work as an Appraiser Trainee with a well respected commercial appraisal firm serving Eastern Washington and North Idaho. In his time in Spokane, Mark obtained his Washington Certified General Appraisal license and worked appraising a wide variety of commercial properties including: retail, office, industrial, multi-family, convenience stores, self-storage, and auto dealerships.
With the arrival of their two children, Mark and his wife elected to return to the Puget Sound area to be nearer to family. Mark is excited to be a part of the staff of Northwest Real Estate Valuation, having completed his MAI designation through the Appraisal Institute in 2014.
Laura Thie joined the team at Northwest Real Estate Valuation in May of 2011 and completed the required coursework through the Appraisal Institute to receive her Certified General Real Estate Appraiser license. Laura completed a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington in 2003 and has used her education in the fields of real estate and non-profit management prior to transitioning to commercial real estate appraisal.
Ms. Thie benefitted from the mentorship of Robert W. Suttles, MAI and principal appraiser for Northwest Real Estate Valuation and is actively working toward her MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute. Laura’s appraisal experience includes familiarity with light industrial, retail, office, medical office, proposed renovations, new construction, convenience stores, apartments, religious facilities, fitness facilities, residential subdivisions, commercial land, and agricultural land and buildings.
Jennifer Johnston grew up in a military family and lived in foreign countries and all over the United States throughout her childhood. She attended college in Munich, Germany, Anchorage, Alaska and Bellingham, Washington. She lived in Colorado Springs with her husband for ten years, where she was a homeschool teacher for their four children. Jennifer moved to Washington in 2009 and now calls the beautiful Skagit Valley home.
Jennifer was first hired at Northwest Real Estate Valuation in the role of Administrative Support in 2009. Since that time, she has completed appraisal coursework with the Appraisal Institute and functions as Appraiser Support Staff. In her time at Northwest Real Estate Valuation, Jennifer has dealt with a wide variety of commercial properties and looks forward to furthering her knowledge in the future.
